Can anyone explain why the poms, whenever given a choice, go for odd sizes?

Simon has it right,,, 21/32 for the inners(the ones at the diff)

& 9/16ths for the outers (the ones at the wheel)

I too did my trade in the 60s, and I still think the poms tended to overcomplicate things. Just look at their range of fasteners - BSF, BSW, BA, metric in Morris Cowleys and so on in the early days.

I guess it was en evolutionery thing stemming from the days of the industrial revolution when there was no effort at or need for standardisation.

Just makes life more interesting.

Changing from rubber unis to pot joints, have all the bits but no balls. Can anyone tell me what size I need to order? I think they are 9/16" but need to confirm. Thanks in advance Brian

There was nothing wrong with those sizes 30 years ago, the UK used the Imperial measuring system of feet, inches and fractions. So did Australia until the late 60s, and USA still does too. I'm lucky I did my trade in the 60s, I learned both Imperial and Metric.

every time I go to the wreckers and find a clubby I always look for them. I have a nice stash of them now. Every time I fit pot joint one has to rollaway but I know I have many spares

The Metric folks also use a 1.0mm pitch on brass stuff as the Brits do 26TPI (brass thread) - they are near enough to the same pitch anyway. Also, guess what pipe threads in the Metric system are (R 1/4, R 3/8, R 1/2, etc).. Yep, good old BSP.

Equally, I love the way you have to do mental arithmetic to work out if 17/32" is bigger than 23/64", but from a certain point (derived from tangents running from Stonehenge through ley lines to the Greenwich meridian) they switch to thousands of an inch, or a de facto anglo/metric system. But then they use both fahrenheit and celsius for temp, so who knows.
