hellooooo,

had a nice whine coming from my gearbox for a while now. doing a shell swap over the next couple months to an 88 rover. so while the engine is out i want to get rid of that whine so transport sa dont query it when i get it inspected.

its an a+ engine and box, it whines when i am sitting in neutral with foot off clutch, goes away when foot it on the clutch.

it whines while acceleration/crusing at speed. seems to quietn down alot apon decelerating.

what bearings could it possibly be? ill replace all the bearings on that side of the box

thanks alot

Matt

clutch thrust bearing - just stick a few slices of cheese in through the hole in the flywheel housing and it'll be happy

its not the thrust bearing. i put a new one on

the noise goes away when i push the clutch to the floor

i agree with simon if the noise gors away when clutch pushed in then thrust bearing

wait which thrust bearing are we talking about

the one on the end of the clutch fork or the one behind the primary gear?

foot on clutch noise dissapears, foot off noise returns. noise under load ,dissapears under over-run.
the brgs on the idler gear or the thrust washer is grinding it's way thru the gearbox case

most a series boxes whine coz at some stage they have been run with buggered bearings in them and the owners have neglected. later when the bearings have been changed the gear train has now got an angled wear pattern on it so that is he cause of the whine. Just like the sound of straight cuts but softer.

yeh except my whine is no wear near that loud.

ive never had a problem with this box

there is nothing wrong with a bit of a whine from a gearbox as long as it drowns out the whine from the missus
