ausmini :: View topic - Best route through Glass House Mountains?

By far my craziest mini related story...

After replacing the battery and eventually getting the car to turn over we set out around 9:30.

We went out through the Kelvin Grove to the Gap on our way to the mountains, Somerset Dam and the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

I had an absolute blast going up the gravel Goat Track to Mount Nebo. Then then across to Mount Glorious... and loved every minute of the decent.

As we were cruising along Wivenhoe-Somerset Road I noticed a bit of a weird vibration coming from up front. Wasn't sure what it was so I got out and had a look at the wheels... gave them a bit of a shove with the boot and had a look under the bonet. Nothing seemed wrong so I figured it might have been some strange road noise due to the grade of stone in the bitumen. Or just undulations in the road.... whatever.

About another two minutes down the road it gets worse, starts to come through the steering wheel as well so I slow right down. As I'm doing this I see a wheel nut fly off the front left and then a pretty decent thump as we lost the entire wheel... going pretty slowly.

So that delayed my arrival on the Sunny Coast by about 10 hours. Even still, I'd have to put it down as the best day of driving the brick that I can remember.

Hey guys, Just wondering if anybody has any suggestions on a nice and easy drive up through the Sunshine Coast hinterland? I'd like to take my girl and the car up there this weekend. Cheers, Dwight.

you could walk up beerburrum, go past steve irwin world. but a nice drive is on sunday to the uemundi markets. Youll still use alot of highway on the way out of Brisbane though.

The back road through the area is fantastic. Beerburrum to Woodford, Woodford to Kenilworth and then to Eumundi. Beautiful country generally bypassed by the rank and file. I hope to retire to the area one day, my family live up the hill at Witta and I used to spend my days scrambling up the Glasshouse mountains as a kid.

I've gotta say, the road over Nebo is one of my favourite Mini roads anywhere, superb... and I'll even get my first chance to drive it in a Mini in September

Eumundi Markets are on Saturday - need to be there in the Morning as they start to wind up about 2pm. Best view of the GH mountains is from the Mary Cairncross Lookout on Mountain view Rd - runs off Landsborough-Maleny Rd at Bald Knob- Picnic ground and kiosk at the lookout on Right hand side of rd- Nice rain forest walk from the picnic area

Have lunch at the Montville pub, they do a bloody good wagu steak! I just spent the week up there with the mini, doesnt matter how you get there, but once your there drive the hunchy rd and theres another one which its name escapes me. The turn off is on the right, off the cliff, just before the montville strip heading from malany. It takes you down to woombye. Both top roads in both directions. Drive safe and have a great weekend.

Her names Janine and she works at the servo on the main road. She is certainly the best root through the Glass House Mountains

If you are in your mini, the best run would be up to Brissie on the M1 out to The Gap and continue on to Mt Nebo. Head to Mt Glorius anfd take the turn to Samford then from Samford head to Dayboro. From Dayboro head up past Mt Mee to Woodford and continue towards Kilcoy. About 2k out of Woodford take a right turn and head towards Peachchester. Just before Peachester take the road to Maleny. Once there, take your pick of what you would like to see. Take the Bruce Hwy, Gateway Motorway and the M1 to get home quicker. Great drive, I'm sure you would enjoy.

Awesome suggestions guys - sorry I couldn't get into the convo through the week... bloody work! I'm about to through a new battery in the brick (found it died on Tuesday) and then get on the road. I'll let you know how/where I go! Dwight

I've never had a wheel fall off before. left them loose yes, but had always found the problem before it became serious. I'm glad it only hapened at a slow speed. I bet you end up checking the wheelnuts every time you go for a drive in it for a while now. Besides that it's great fun up there in a mini isn't it?

Last time I was up there was a few years ago now, on the bike, knee down, yehaa! Next time I see your mechanic I will give him a kick in the nuts for you. You know, for not paying enough attention to your nuts. So 10 hour delay? Couldn't you just put the wheel back on and get on your way? Any road rash on the lower control arm/ball joint/disc?
