Post subject:  Engines, ADR's and a lot of BS!

I have 2 998's. One has a prefix of 99H834AJ and the other 99H791P.

I have been in contact with the RTA (NSW) to find out what I can and can't use. This was their latest reply:

"The issue is going to rely on the age of the engine.

The engine number prefix of 99H79 appears to have been available in a 1975 model vehicle.

The engine with a prefix of 99H83 was available in a vehicle from 1976.

I would have to assume from this that the engine with a prefix of 99H79 wouldn't comply to the Australian Design rules for emission control. (ADR 27a)"

What a lod of BS.....the block is the same....it's the head that has the ADR complying bolt on's...... :?

Yet the same guy tells Chris Z that he can use an 1100s block in a late model clubby. What vintage is an 1100s block?

What have others found out on this subject?

I was told the same as you when I went for a blue slip (engine change). I had put a recon'd `74 1098 (1015 prefix) into the `78 Clubbie which had the later prefix like yours.

Too old he said.. so I drove away and left it unchanged..
<edit> 1100S block is late `60s. I run one in my `70 car.

.....and now I got this, which I believe is what he told Chris...

"The engine you wish to use would only be acceptable if it ran straight LPG or you obtain an engineers report confirming compliance."

So in theory an engineer could sight it and say..."yea it complies" and sign it off..... :?

I can't be bothered with that...I'll use my original 998 block.

Kev, maybe you could have legally run that 1098 after all.....

yea new can go in old, but not old in newer.... :?

You can put newer engine into an old car, but get this:

An engine from a later model vehicle may be fitted to an earlier model only if all the emmission control systems are retained

The engineer I consulted before starting my project told me that this was to bring WA into line with national guidelines. I even have to have a pressurised fuel tank cap!

that might also apply to fitting a late Rover Mini motor to an old school Mini. :?

Hope you havent given up on the older motor JAM. The original service book for my mini with dealer stamps etc states that date of delivery was 6-8-76 and the engine number is 99h702vh not sure how much of the prefix is used but at 99h7 I am assuming it would be legal. My compliance plates also state that it is a 76 model and numbers match. Hope this helps.

Cheers

whats the date on your compliance plate under the hood?

Odds on it's pre 6/1976....thats when the ADS changed. Mine is stamped 8/1976

My Old LS i had (998 Model) had a Mk2 S Block in it. It didn't have the air pump or the likes on it. Just the Charcol Canister. It had been Given an engineers certificate, so my suggestion is to speak to an engineer and tell him what you want to do, and he will tell you what you need to do. It really shouldn't be a problem and a helpful engineer will make it all happen easily. Shouldn't cost much either. You were going to get your brakes engineered so to do it all at once.

Cheers

On after thought if the ADS changed, would that make it legal not to run the plumbing?

6/76 was the cut over to the plumbing - ADR27 to ADR 27a (I think)....so you don't need it....but confirm with a guru first.
