I have manifold part no aeg 347,and the bowls sit very close to the extractors . i have a spacer onbetween carby to manifold. Do i need / can i get wider spacers?

Just use 2 spacers. This adds volume and length to the inlet tract too. Better for torque.

I got a pair of spacers from a MG specialist today.Now it looks like i'll have to get longer studs or try bolts , its been segested to use unc threaded bar cut to length. any idears?

Yep UNC threaded rod is fine.
You can also use long UNC setscrews (ie fully threaded bolts) from Supercrap, and cut the heads off. These are Grade 5 hi-tensile steel.
