As the title suggests, I have a morris minimatic that has a shagged forward clutch. looking to rebuild it, but am thinking it would be a good backup box for the other currently running and registered matic. Question is, can I put a later model rover auto off a 1275efi auto car under my standard morris 998 engine? Kinda like the idea of having park rather than just relying on a handbrake. Any advice/comments always welcome. thanks!

I'd just get the whole box and 998 A+ combination.
If your box is shagged the rest might not be far behind.

The original forward clutches are not very good. They will let go well before anything else needs looking at. I would change the forward clutch and paint the motor while it is out and stick it back in for another 30 years.

Mr M1100, someone told me there were a number auto transmissions (6 think), is this correct or were there just running changes as time progressed? How interchangable are transmissions and internal parts?

What he said.... ^^^ I did exactly that. My 1970 Matic had sat in a garden for 10 years, the motor ran after some encouragement, but it had no gears except Retreat.
I stuck 2 new forward clutch plates in it, put it in a 76 Clubby, drove it for a year or two, then sold it. It went like a train, didn't even use oil... :shock:

They made running changes to the box as time went on but most bits will interchange.
Parts are available from Jpat in England.

hey Josh - don't quote me, but usually 'park' is a little catch that drops over one of the gears, which is why other automatics clunk from the gearbox. I don't think you should rely on the park position over a handbrake - better to keep the handbrake in top condition

I've heard that a 'matic can be push started - if you leave a 'matic in 1st, can you push the car around? will it roll, or is it like leaving a manual car in gear?

In 1st gear a Matic just freewheels, but you can tow start it in the other gears. Push start won't work unless there's a hill, as the aux oil pump has to build pressure up first. :lol:

Our red matic took to 27miles an hour to start.. and the 2 average late 20 somethiings that were pushing me could only push to 25miles.. :D :D

Yeah simon, i always use the handbrake as well. just the thought of 4 wheels locking is better than 2.

Thanks Harley, Doc and Morris 1100 and Simon, have had a browse on the Jpat website, fired off some queries to get a clutch repair kit, as she does her original engine/box and im only the 2nd owner, 1st owners never removed the engine so its never been out. So will try along those lines for now. Might have to leave my park/rover auto fantasy to a different car. Maybe the panelvan

That will keep it as a "matching numbers" original car.

Did you have a look at the Forward clutch modification on Todd Miller's Austin America site? http://members.tripod.com/austin_america/id72.html

Yeah i did. As you can probably tell from my posts, im kinda green when it comes to mods. I printed out all that austin america mods, going to pull it all down, pull the parts out so I can "see" it all, then probably yell out saying "what the hell am i supposed to do with all this again?" :D Guess I'll never know if i dont give it a go! Thanks for your help guys, the ausmini community is the best!
