which direction did you turn it over? to reverse prime the oil pump, you have to turn the engine over backwards. |

screw your gauge in and turn the motor over (with the spark plugs out)untill you get oil pressure. the sound will change when it pumps up too. Shouldnt do any damage turning over with the key, i do it all the time. Also a tip is to heat the oil up (in a bucket of hot water) before you poor it in & fill the radiator with hot water, this warms everything up in preperation for the first start. |

I wouldn't start a new motor until you've got proven oil pressure. You can get 30 PSI on the starter motor with the plugs out, enough to know that your pump is primed and working. Don't start and run it, because then you're putting load on the bearings and unless you've got pressure, you're going to cause wear. When I built my first engine as a teenager, I forgot to fit the oil pump gasket and of course couldn't get pressure. In my naiivety I got the engine started and let it run for probably 20 seconds or so, waiting for the oil pressure to come up. It didn't, of course, and that turned into a lemon of an engine... Take the oil pressure relief valve out and squirt oil into the pump that way (while slowly turning the engine over backwards) to prime it. Refit the valve, then turn the motor over on the starter without the plugs. |

If you start it without oil pressure the motor may survive but you can seriously affect the life of the bearings. Mini bearings don't have a long life (compared to modern cars) anyway. Safer to crank it on the starter with the spark plugs out. Pete |

I prime the pump throught the banjo bolt hole, then leave that bolt slightly loose and crank it (plugs out) until oil flows out. Then I tighten it and crank until it comes out the gauge/sender hole in the block. Once you get that, all is good... put the plugs in. |
