Just curious as to why these are used? Sealing? Prevent movement?

I don't know, but as they were there at build, I just put them back on re-installation of my front subframes.

Allows the holes to be bigger for easy alignment.

Thanks all but forgive me, but how does a thin compressible washer help instead of an 'ordinary' one which would do the same thing? I'm suspicious its to prevent movement because it gets compressed into the shape of the hole when tightened. Having said that one edge was bent upwards so perhaps its to help prevent turning of the bolt similar to a lock tab. Perhaps I would need to ask the engineer.

They're called "Panel" Washers and are still available on the shelves at bolt shops and even bolt racks at Autobarn, Supercheap and the like.
They help to spread the load more in thin metal panels as the bolts are tightened up to prevent the metal tearing.
