Yes, they are rare and sort after on the U.K market. I've sold a mint, boxed set of the early type for over 400 Pounds on eBay UK in the past.

Yes, as a kiddy I remember our SV1 Valiant (1963 model?) had them. Quite a novelty, as it was the only car I knew at the time to have seat belts. |

I had a set in my 63 cooper. I took it out for a blat at lakeside with the club, we were able to take a passenger if they signed a waiver as well. The car passed scrutineering, but to our utter dismay, as we slammed the brakes on at the end of the straight, the magnetic clasps flipped open under deceleration and strain  (It had S brakes, not the diminutive little 7x0.25" cooper discs)
I had a steering wheel to brace off, my mate had a halda he grabbed onto  We simply clung onto the clasps for the rest of the sprint through any hard braking.
Watch out, there's no guarantee of safety when it comes to these old buggers, I can't imagine a real accident would offer any less deceleration and strain than a hard brake at the end of the straight... They were first generation safety belts, and magnetic clasps were left behind for reasons not dissimilar to the one above I would reckon. |
