Post subject:  Cracked Heads

Hi as the topic sugests

I have three 1275 heads that have cracks in them
Is there any way of fixing them or am i just collecting scrap metal
I have one Mk1 s head that is to far gone
A genuine Mk2 s head cracks between the valves and one into an exhaust port
And another 940 head with cracks between the valves

so can they be fixed if so how and who ???
if i run then with cracks Providing that they don't leak coolant will they still be o.k.

Thanks Beanie

I had a mk 1 's' head that had cracks between two sets of valves. I had it reconditioned by one of the reputable guys in Canberra but they actually had the welding done by a firm in Melbourne. It cost me a fair bit but the head was a nicely worked one which would have cost a fair bit to replicate.

I've had the head running on the engine for about 4 months now and so far all is good.

If they are standard heads, I'd probably put them in the corner until I was desperate and try to source a non-cracked one to build up.

Take them to Auto Welders. They are in Pym Street off churchill rd. They can weld them up and re-con them

Depending on size and location of crack.....
- Getting the head converted to unleaded and fitting hardened valve seats may kill two birds with one stone...

Recovered my ported head (one of Henry's) back in the early/mid ninties that way ... still going strong.

( running them with cracks is likely to cause the crack to get worse )

But as suggested may be cheaper to source another head than repair (now - but keep heads for future when cost of repairs are less than alternate head )
