Well today was the day. The mini left me stranded. To cut a very long story short I broke down approaching a roundabout, engine just died. Had to push it up onto the grass on the side of the road. Mini started again so i tried to high tail it home, got about 20metres then it died again.

BIG BIG BIG thank you to Kevin (1310/71), Josh (Mini_mad), and Emmeline (betty), who all come after work to give me a hand. Really appreciate the generosity of these guys staying for close to 3hours to try and get me running again so I could get home. In the end once the traffic had died down we used Josh's Liberty to tow me the 5minutes home. These guys are all absolute legends they really did put themselves out a long way to give me a hand, and I really appreciate every minute of their time. THANKS GUYS!!!!

The only other person that stopped was some guy in a ute asking if its for sale, when I said I'm actually broken down he left haha.

It looks like a dodgy connection has stopped getting 12V continuously to the coil. We swapped coils and played around with it (Luckily Dane had a multimeter on him - but not much else) after going home and getting some torches, tools and spares.

We did actually get it running and had it idling whilst we packed up ready to go, but it stalled and we couldn't re-start it hence the tow.

Unfortunately his wiring harness has been (shall we say modified) and hence it could be anywhere.

I think the ignition switch and/or terminals to it/from it and around the fuse box area are the first places to start looking.

His earth lead on the battery is also loose enough to remove and twist by hand which is never a good thing in my book, but I can't see how that would affect a car sitting stationary idling with no other interference.

It's one of the great things about this place and car clubs, there's always someone around the corner or close by to help when you need it most

Wish we could have sorted it for you but the wiring in ronnie is a bit of a shocker!

At least you can choose your friends if you can't choose your family (or inlaws for that matter)

that car is still running a geny? has it as a guess, it'll be a corroded connection at the regulator. Why do i say this, happened to me last week

Worth checking, and it is still running a generator, but we were struggling to get a consistent 12V at the fuse box further back. I still think it is ignition switch or wiring thereabouts.

haha yea thanks again josh. Definately not happy at the inlaw for being 2 mins away and refusing to help. Then rocking up and acting as though its an easy fix. Sorry for his rudeness.

at least you can't blame me for the wiring in that thing . The PO did a right job of it

At least i fixed the one that got me stranded - new main cable from the battery to the starter terminal + new exhaust. The original had been worn through by the incorrect exhaust rubbing through the insulation. The PO obviously knew this because he had wrapped some tape around the exhaust

Anyway, my suggestion would be to trace the PO's "kill switch" circuit, if you know what i mean. When we went to test drive the car before we bought it, this caused a bit of an issue. But being the sucker I am, i still bought it

If your serious about having it "rewired" (which I certainly think is a safe and best option, but expensive). Have a talk with the auto electrician first about whether it would be easiest or best to purchase one of those new wiring harnesses that they make to order rather than have him sit there and recreate it?

These days they can add extra wires for additional gauges, relays etc that you either have added or want to add.
