Don't underestimate the costs. I was given an old trailer which I cut and modified just to suit a mini, so no steel costs.

Budget - what I actually spent:
ORIGINAL FRAME COST $ nil Andy
LIGHT BAR, PRE WIRED $100.00 Supercheap
BEARINGS REFLECTORS JOCKEY WHEEL etc $185.87 Martins Trailer Parts
13" HOLDEN RIMS - PAIR $100.00 Avanti Tyres
13" LT TYRES - PAIR $180.00 Avanti Tyres
WEIGHBRIDGE $25.00 Novacoat
MISC HARDWARE $80.00
INSPECTION FEES $103.50 Two lots
PAINT $ nil already had it
STAMP DUTY AND LICENSE FEES $85.55 DPI
TOTAL $859.92

That was for a single axle trailer. The cost of parts does add up.

Another enlightened Victorina law: If a trailer is less than 3m long, narrower than the towing vehicle and weighs less than 200kg unladen and for private use, then you don't have to register it at all. So 90% of the 6x4 and smaller trailers are not registered.

I know I am in NSW but I borrowed it from a Victorian mate.

Nice idea but considering the work involved (and having to trust your welding skills) it seems a bit pricey . I would have thought there wouldn't be much need for this type of kit since it is all stuff you either buy over the counter (springs , axle , hubs etc) or buy and cut to length (steel) . You're basically buying the design more than the parts I guess ???

Marshall Engineering. I've bought a lot of stuff from these guys for my own trailers and caravan, partly because they are close by and partly because it's always quality gear at a decent price. I reckon it's likely to be a good kit, but you can probably pick up a second-hand trailer of similar spec complete for the same price. This trailer is overkill for towing a Mini anyway. awdmoke, some money-saving ideas. Although more appropriate to my location than yours, they may shave $150 or so off your costings - Whitworths Leisure down the street from my work have the long trailer boards for $80. - Holden 13" rims can be had for $25 each from Marshall-Eng (they had a huge stock last time I was there). Would need a scrub and paint though. - Jockey wheel, bearings and reflectors are cheap at Super-Crap. Cheers,

The cost of parts does add up. I know it isn't cheap but don't forget on your list above , the bold highlighted things you would need to pay for with the trailer kit as well .

In Vic: - No stamp duty on trailers. - Inspection fee at VicRoads $35. A once off provided nothing is dodgy. - Number plate fee $27.50 (first registration only). - Rego for a year is $35.60. Approx $100 all in.

I got knocked back the first time mostly because I didn't use stamped rated chains - that changed from the last time I made a trailer. Still cheaper in Vic. If I'd got it on my first pass it would have been $135 all in.

I don't think my local VicRoads have heard of stamped chains. Every time I have registered a trailer they have checked the lights, the numbers, the tyre treads and that's it. I know I am in NSW but I borrowed it from a Victorian mate. I looked into that one via the NSW RTA. We can tow an unregistered 6x4 trailer into SA or NSW without an issue. As soon as it is attached to a non-VIC registered car it becomes illegal. (To clarify, the 3m length is the absolute length including any load, not just the bed length.)
