depends on front or rear.

rear is alot easier to do. front requires cv and driveshaft to come out, at least a ball joint cracked to get it out of the way.

theres a fair bit of work but its not to hard to do.

easiest way to do it, crack both ball joints, remove cv nut, remove cv and drive shaft, crack steering rack end, lock the brake hose with vice grips (not too tight) undo the brake hose, and turn it around till it comes away from the hose, take it off the car altogether.

reverse to put it back on. Might as well grease gun all your nipples while your there.

To answer your question

Then yes, you can do it on the car without undoing balljoints.

-You will need to undo the CV nut and pull the drive flange out of the hub, you should be able to leave the CV joint sitting in the hub. (might need a puller of some sort to remove flange).
-remove brake shoes and wheel cylinders (you can leave the cylinders on the plate, but you need to undo the hose and pipe)
-undo the 3 small bolts holding the backing plate onto the hub. (make sure you have a good fitting socket, as these are often tight and easy to round off)

The biggest problem your likely to have is removing the flange. Other then that its a pretty easy job

if you leave it on the car, you will need to undo the brake hose at the subframe, and this can be a pain in the ass. Easier to crack ball joints and turn the hub off the one end of the brake hose.

If your brake hose isn't twisted to start with, it will end up back in the same spot when you do it up. You just need to break the hose fitting loose, unbolt the cylinder, push the cylinder out of the backing plate and wind the cylinder of the hose.

The cylinder will thread back on just as far as it was, meaning the hose won't be twisted, unless it already was.

Each to their own though, both ways get there in the end.
