Post subject:  Hi reving at start up

I've just restarted my Cooper S after a diff change a few months ago, basically drained the tank, put fresh fuel in, new plugs & cranked it over, when it fired it reved up to 4 to 5-000 rpm, so i switched it off.

Checked the weber linkage, normal, checked over the manifold for air leaksm could'nt find anym no air leak at the booster vacuum port, basically got me stuffed.

The motor was removed, diff replaced, motor put back in, nothing major removed.

Any thoughts?

I couldnt imagine anything except a stuck throttle causing that.

Does the acc pedal feel normal?

nitrous oxide leaking? oh wait, nah, that wouldn't make it rev...

is your hose to the brake booster cut where it goes through the inner guard?

I've had the choke cable lock before so the car over revved when it started.
I thought the choke wasn't on, so took a minute to find.

For it to rev to 4000 the butterfly on the carb has to be open more than normal or it wouldn't have the fuel/air to do it. If the idle screw doesn't make any difference (I would guess that's the first thing you tried) you need to take the carbie off and check the operation of the butterflies.
