there are a hell of a lot of variables - I reckon most suggestions will be a stab in the dark

get a workshop manual out, pull the carb apart, reassemble it and go from there

mine was doing this - at best could get it to idle for 10-20 seconds before conking out, turned out it was running too rich, just leaned her off a little and the idle was much better.

It's either one of two things, causing the same problem.
1. Carb has a leak, most likely the Throttle shaft has worn.
2. Manifold gasket is damaged, worn or manifold is loose. Check the bolts are tight first.

Turn the car on and pour water over the manifold first, what does it do?
If nothing pour some over the carn(not down it's throat of course) What does it do?

Let us know what you get.

Of course if you havne't ever had it tuned, it may well be running lean as the above boys have suggested
