I don't drive my mini much these days, work is only a 15 min push bike ride since we moved so i was thinking of Historic Rego.

I've had a car on it previously, about 10 years ago, so i'm a bit out of the loop as far as mods go.
-1971 K
- bigger engine (1275)
-later model brakes (metro, so can't fit original wheels, though i can put a set of 12inch rover steelies on)
-1 3/4 SU
-noticable cam
-extractors
-sports steering wheel

so it's not very standard anymore. Anyone know of a club in SA that might pass this many mods for Historic Rego? in my previous experience it's been the discretion of each particular club scrutineer to judge your suitability. Anyone know a favorable one?

cheers.

not 100% sure but talkin to a bloke at work, to get historic rego its has to be original. Some clubs are more anal than others about originality (the guy i spoke to is a memeber of the corvette club with a corvette on historic, and they want the wingnuts on the aircleaner to be original and no post car age stereo as a couple of examples. Other clubs are more lenient (i'm told), but doesn't sound promising.

Drop into Morris Mania at Kent Town with your car and talk to Adrian. He is one of the people authorised to inspect cars for historic rego on behalf of Hotbricks SA. I know that they allow some period modifications sometimes, but as you say, at the discretion of the approving person. Clubs can get into big trouble for passing cars with too many mods. I have a standard Cooper S on historic rego, and the period mini lites were about the limit of allowed mods...

I am a plate registrar for our local club. The laws for historic rego vary from state to state and are currently undergoing review to have a standard system in each state.

In each state though, it is a permit to drive an unregistered car on public roads on occasions - it cannot be a daily driver.

In NSW it has to be a recognised club sanctioned event (with paper work to confirm that) or a "maintainance" run of about 12 kms (varies from club to club). In other states you have a maximum number of kms it can be driven and log books must be kept. Regardless it cannot be a daily driver.

Now as for modifications - The concept is to keep historic cars in priivate hands as historical assets for the community. Modifications are an issue and under review. No one expects all cars to be absolutely concours with the anal "right wing nut" but the general description is "original".

You can certainly do things like replacing a generator with an alternator etc etc but to use an unrelated example - you cannot put a V8 in a EH holden and call it a conditionally registered historic vehicle.

Hot Rods enthuisiasts have their registration system.

Now with minis - this is a very very grey area. To the letter of the law (in NSW) you cannot fit a 1275 motor and disc brakes and claim historic rego but for the sake of keeping historic cars alive many clubs over look this.

Most plate registrars have the attitude that if it would pass the registration process and be legally able to drive on the roads then it can be granted conditional historic registration. However, the various authorities are very much on top of this and it only needs a few bad eggs with modified cars to flaunt the system and the scrutiny will be intensfied.

It is under national review to make a standard system throughout Australia. For the record - my own mini is a modified one with a 1275 and disc brakes.

Mike

From the list of mods, I really don't think they would allow that many through, but I'll pm you with some names for you to try.

One other option is seasonal rego - where you can register it 6 months of the year - I know of a few moke owners who do this and leave their cars in the garage during winter for obvious reasons (with the exception of a drive around the block or up and down the street once a week/fortnight to keep things ticking over). If you can't get historic this is another option (although pretty useless if you want to drive it every weekend).

Insurers such as Shannons also have features such as 'limited use' and 'extreme limited use' on their policies, so even if you have to pay full rego it might be worth looking into as you could probably get a big discount on insurance if you're not doing many kays a year.

Depends if you want to pay their membership fee! Might as well just register the car for the whole year...

All depends on the club and the person inspecting the car...

Someone picked up on an annual inspection that I had dual brake master cylinders and said no go... Previously I was overseas and they would just stamp the book for me :D

Normally saftey modifications you can get through

The motoring federation are getting stricter on this, and are policing the clubs to ensure that "substantially" original cars only are placed on historic rego. My car has contessas and spotlights and I had no drama through our local club, but I know they have knocked back some other cars.
I haven't got time to look up the details, but I undertsand there is a new category being considered (or already happening) for modified - eg hot rods etc.
If clubs abuse the intent of the legislation, they run the risk of having their right to issue log books revoked - as well as hefty fines.
Peter.
