Hey, I have a question about some wiring on a 71 clubman with a 998cc. Theres a wire coming from the Distributor, does this go to the coil and if so is it the +ve or -ve? How many wires go to the coil? We have the one from the distributor, a green wire and a white wire. Any help would be great even some pictures if anyone has them. Thanks Blake |

Assuming the car is Negative earth, The wire coming from the distributor goes to the -ve terminal of the coil (this is the trigger wire and causes the coil to produce a spark when the points break). The white wire should be the 12v supply (check with multimeter) - this goes to the positive on the coil. I'm not sure about the green wire (can't find it on the wiring diagram), but does your car have a tachometer/rev counter? If so that's probably the sensor wire - not 100% but I think that also goes to the -ve terminal on the coil (but this depends on the tach itself). |

Oh ok thanks, we gave it a try. Am i suppose to get a spark inside the distributor when we turn it over with the cap off? |

Not sure what you mean, there should be a small (hardly even noticable) spark at the points when they open. The lead that goes from the coil to the distributor should send out a spark each time the points open - you can test this by removing the lead from the distributor, peeling back the rubber boot and holding the end of the lead about 1mm from a metal part of the engine (don't touch the end of the lead with your fingers or you will get a jolt!) - when you crank the engine you should see sparks between the lead and the engine. If you're not getting a spark, the coil, leads, points or condenser may be faulty. |
