its getting really hard to get into first from stationary, is there anything i can do to fix it?? I have adjusted the clutch to .060 but seems to have got worse how far can i go out??

The correct gap between the arm and the little stop screw is .020".
Measured with the return spring off.
.060" is too much, but the original 850 manual did specify that. Was rectified in later books.

So with the gap so big this is what is causing my troubles? it also says that i should adjust the over throw, do i need to? Also if worse comes to worse as i don't have a garage to do the job, can anyone recommend someone close to glebe to get a new clutch put in.

That gap is total free play in the clutch operating mechanism. At .060" you will have this problem.
The smaller this gap is, the more the arm will move when the pedal is pressed and the less clutch drag you will get.
Please set it at .020", this will either reduce your problem or fix it.
If problem is still there after this check for wear on the pivot pin, and the ball on the bottom of the arm.

Also, check the clutch master cylinder bore. It should be 0.75", some Minis have a .70" one which is too small and doesn't give enough clutch travel. Particularly when things wear.

I put the gap back to 0.20 and its all good again but thought i should buy a new spring and got one from classic motoring but it seems far to small compared to the old one is there a way to stretch it out?

That looks like a VERY heavy duty spring - much like many I have seen fitted to Minis. The spring only has to provide minimal tension to hold the bearing off the diaphragm when the clutch pedal is not pressed.

You should be able the extend the spring enough to fit both ends with your bare fingers. Anything more is overkill.

That is the current standard spring. Stretch it if you want but it works fine as is.
