Currently sourced a 998 engine, nothing huge, 40thou OB.... what sort of things need to be done to make it a daily drive engine? one that can do the highway speeds, yet have enough to get around town in no hassles?

ill obviously drop GR a line later on, just wanting to know everyones thoughts first off.

A race cam and a bag of concrete.

On another note, i think a 3.1 or so final drive would make it far better on highways. Mine tends to get a little loud. But ive got a lumpy cam in mine, and hopefully twin carbs, then it should run a bit quiter with more power.

My stock 998 is a daily driver with no problems whatsoever (SHOOSH BRETT!!). I would ideally like a set of extractors, maybe work the 12g202 head I have and whack it on and possibly a tickled cam but that's about it.

Cherry does 110km/h on the highway without any issues and she'll sing all the way up to 5000rpm, just lacking in torque for hills :?

A nice cam, some head work, matching carb, lightened flywheel, electronic ignition, 3.44diff, extractors, 1.75" exhaust.

Keep it stock. My van is pushing 200,000 miles (i'd be guessing it's not pushing 100,000 miles hehe). It's still the stock 1100 with HS2 (1.25") carb, pea shooter exhaust. Runs like a clock, doesn't blow smoke. Synchro's are a fair bit slow, but so is the engine so who cares!

Get a 12G202 head for it, as Jess suggested. Keep that stock.

Is there a difference between standard 1100 and 998 cam profiles?

HS4 carb. Standard manifold. Big donut air cleaner. Stock dizzy, but get it rebuilt.

3.44 diff. I wouldn't go lower with a stocko 998.

yeap :P

you want to lightly tickle it so it's a bit of fun and can get you around easily IMO. Will still be reliable as a rock.

The secret is a good head, carb and cam.

1100 crank and pistons, standard cam, 12g202 if you have one, single hs4, and your away :D

my old 998 had upgraded cam, 3.44 diff and extractors/exhaust combination and that was it. Was perfect for up to 120km/h, had great low down torque for up hills without drop down gear changes, sounded excellent and never missed a beat. Only maintenance it ever needed was new plugs, new leads, gaskets and regular oil changes in the 3 years i had it.

What i was thinking.
If you go 1 3/4 carb, get the manifold ported to match the carb and the head.
A mildly modded engine is more efficient too.

A de-tuned stock standard 850. It will still be going after another 50 years :D :D

my 850 has been running the original standard 848 for 45 years.
I recently drove it 1600kms and did a motorkhana inbetween. :)
didnt miss a beat

i dont see any harm in adding an exhaust/extractors/bigger carb and some headwork though.

a bigger cam will change the driveability and reliability however.

A 3.44 diff is really too tall for a 998 performance Mini in Oz. Will go better with a 3.647 (Mini K) or a 3.765 (850 & Deluxe). Even the 998 Coopers only ran a 3.765.

Yeah I know the 998 Clubbies ran a 3.44, but it really was too tall, hills killed them in comparison. :P

Mate what I'm doing to Mine.

998 Block/Crank no idea if its bored out yet but All I'm doing is

202 Head ensuring all is correct with the Values & Guids. Get the sharp part of the chamber remored by GR. Double springs as running a bigger Cam not sure which one to go for yet but atleast a RE13 which I have in the 1152 already. HS4 with repair Kit put through it so its perfect. Extractors and New Exhaust 1.75. Possible new Oil pumps and water Pump and check Timing chain staying with a Single chain.
I'm going 3.6 diff as the 3.44 in Morris is not quite to my liking as I want a little more off the line. Get rid of the points on the Dizzy
