I'm going to be replacing the engine in Linus with another one soon, and I just want to know if the is there anything in particular that should be taken care of while the engine bay is empty? What should I look at and replace while the engine is out? Also, instead of starting a new thread......I've only ever taken the engine out of one FWD car. With a RWD car, as you lift and pull the engine forward, the tail shaft will slide out of the back of the gearbox and it's easy as pie. With the laser though, I had to splay the front wheels out in order to separate the drive shafts from the gear box to pull it out. Is it the same with the mini? I heard someone (somewhere? I can't remember) say something about lifting the engine with a crane and the drive shafts just dropping out, but that doesn't sound right to me. Anyone? |

same as laser sortabut while its out check the steering rack coz its easy to get at with no power unit in the way. |

When i yanked Veeras motor out as i lifted it up a bit i swung it to the left and rhs pot joint fell out then swing to the right an lhs pot joint fell out, yer put yer left foot in yer put yer left foot out.............. |

The easiest way to do this (regardless whether you have pot joints, Hardy Spicers or rubber uni's) is to split the top ball joint on each side, then splay the hubs out. This retracts the drive shaft from the uni joint allowing plenty of clearance to lift the motor straight out. |

When you lift the motor of the subframe, there should be enough sideways movement of the engine to allow to remove the pot joints, one at a time, and same when your putting the engine back in. However if you've never done it before you will probably stuff around longer trying to do it this way then what sgc suggested. |

I would also pull as many ancillaries off of it as you can. That will hopefully stop too many things scratching the paint. Also, don't forget to undo the speedo cable when lifting out the engine and make sure you mark where the nuts tighten up on the bonnet hinges so that you put the bonnet back on the same position. |
