Post subject:  Sharp Squeek

Just over the last couple of days, when i turn the motor over after its been sitting there for some time, say overnight, or even half the day, i get a sharp metal squeek, sometimes it will happen when i rev it again after its started, and then it dissapears.

I am gathereing that something is dry, and as soon as oil pressure builds up and gives whatever is squeeking a coat of oil, it stops.

It has only happened a max of 3 times, then the motor runs and sounds fine. Squeek is short and quick, no longer than half a second.

Question is what is dry before oil pressure, could it be a lifter, or the cam, or the oil pump itself. I did the screwdriver to the ear thing over all pistons and revved the motor and it sounds fine, not like a fubar piston ring.

Motor was put together about a year ago. Block was machined and bearings replaced, new bearings through out. It has never been super low on oil, but has overheated drastically when i split the radiator.

EDIT: before anybody asks, ill be in Marree by Friday, and then on the Oodnadatta after that.

undo the fan belt and give the alternator & water pump a spin by hand

is it very loud?
sometimes a loose or very tight fan belt can make a loud screech.

not very loud, but loud enough to hear from inside the car. When i try to listen to it from around the engine bay it doesnt sound like its coming from the fan belt. It sounds like metal rubbing against metal.

As i said, as soon as the oil light goes out (i dont have a pressure guage and it goes out almost instantly) the noise wont appear again. If it were the belt i would assume that it would happen intermittantly and more often.

I will double check and retiighten the fan belt, water pump is new when motor was put together, and alternator is second hand 65A from brickworx. So it "may" be the alternator.
