Post subject:  Doors and boot keyed the same?

Just about to put in boot and door handles. All three at the minute are different. Have previously had a locksmith match all the keys (on a holden) and wonder if the mini locksets can be matched?

Have seen new lock sets for doors but have not seen all three the same.

Ideas?

Regards and thanks.

Yes, a locksmith can remove the lock barrels to match the locks. I have had three minis done now, they seem to do it quite easily.

you trust your car to someone, but not your collection of handguns?

my door and boot were different, then I broke the door handle, I got another handle off a mate, and guess what - it matched the boot key!

A matched trio of keys and barrels are available from Minispares UK for a bargain price. I had all three changed out by a locksmith for 60 bucks, but left my ignition as a different barrel for a similar reason to Drexxle (minus the dead bodies in the boot :P).

The new barrels are a little rough initially until they wear the sharp edges off the keys and the tumblers, but its all smooth after a week or so of use..

Most decent locksmiths can recode locks for a mini easily, David Lyons is a very good locksmith 0408 236047 give him a call

Thanks for all the tips.

Went to a local lock smith in Gosford today just to see what could be done. Under the drivers handle was a number that he used to cut a blank and 2 minutes later he had the handle working. Will pick up the boot handle tomorrow as it has to be tweaked to match the new key. Too easy I suppose.

Cheers

Morris mini locks are very simple , instead of using tiny springs and posts to match the key to the barrel they use tiny cutout bits of steel (gates ?) with different height grooves . Take the barrel out of a lock and you'll see what I mean . You can pull the bits of steel (gates) out of the lock barrel and rearrange them or swap them with some from other locks to make them match a key . I've just about run out of the tiny gates now but used to save them from locks I'd pulled apart before dumping stuffed doors/broken handles .

Mind the condition of the locks as a whole. As time wears on the metal pins wear grooves into the outer barrel. what it means is that they don't purchase very hard wen the handle is locked. Thats why you get ignitons which can be operated with a screwdriver.

Common on door handles and the ignition barrel as these are the most commonly used..
