Been fixing this area in the last few days. Looks sound to me - but I am a amateur. Mainly surface rust and took off this with a wire wheel. The battery box is rusted out and need a replacement.
I remember seeing something which looked like a plastic black battery boxes available at Mini Car Clinic in Padstow, Sydney in the late 1990s (believe they have changed their name). If I am correct, can I just cut off the bottom half of the box and just slip in a new plastic one? how much are they anyway?
Are there other options?

If only the bottom is rusted and the rest sound, do what I did-
Cut the bottom out, but leave 4mm or so ledge all round.
Cut a piece of 2mm or 2.5mm steel to size, drop it in.
Weld all around underneath with MIG. It'll never rust out again.

How's it going Marc,

I have seen plastic battery covers, to replace the original crapy cardboard ones but not a platic replacment section... that one is news to me. Michael at Suziki Mini Spares (formally Normanhurst Minis) has a plastic battery cover on the shelf. (There you go Michael you owe me one!)

If you need a new battery box I may have a spare brand new one. Send me a message If your interested and I'll dig it out. Otherwise drmini in aust has a good and easy idea there it you are much at hand forming new panels.

Not that I was ever a delinquint growing up  but... Road signs make fantastic sheet metal for making new panels or section repairs out of. Just putting it out there, just an idea... You guys pay taxes, those signs belong to you anyway, you''re just reapproptiating whats rightfully yours!

Just for the record I have never stolen anything, the sign I used came from de-commitioned Sub Station and was going to become paper clips.. Stealing is bad

Thanks for the info, especially the bit on road signs. Like you, I am a law abidding citizen, who occasionally and coincidentally might find a street sign on their front lawn!!
My battery cover is strangely still in good nick (and original too). I might follow Drmini's suggestion. Thanks
