I over tightened one of the nuts on the rear wheel and have threaded either the nut or the stud, it just keeps spinning, luckily it still comes off. How does one fix this? new wheel nut, anyone have a spare? how do I replace the stud? Is it safe to drive with only 3 wheel nuts?

I wouldn't drive it with three nuts. I had that happen to me and I had to drive a short distance on three nuts - it had a good case of the wobbles! What kind of wheels do you have? Not all nuts are the same, as I found out. |

Hi Yes - dont drive it as it places a great deal of stress on the other wheel studs and nuts and the studs may snap. This means you could have a wheel come lose at speed with disasterous and or fatal results. End of lecture - wheel studs are easy to get and easy to replace. Most racing cars have all the studs and nuts replaced at least once a year as a precaution. On a clubman the come in one of two types and the only difference is the length. Some clubmans had what is called stepped drums. Usually those with flairs and it was to give a wider track (wider distance between the wheels) These require the longer studs. Thse with ordinary drums require the shorter studs. Wheel nuts and studs can be bought from any of the mini suppliers -Karcraft, minisport, mini king etc etc. To change them - just take off the brake drum - tap out the stud - slip the new one in and tighten up a nut until it locks into place (it has grooves that lock it) then replace the drum, replace the wheel and tighten up all the nuts. Or get a mechanic to do it. Its a ten minute job Mike |
