How much horse power can a standard mini CV take? I have standard CV's on the rear of the Twini, and want to put 1275's in it. If the CV was to break, what would give first? The shaft and loose a wheel, or the joint itself? Where is the weekest point? |

Back in the 80's they were supposed to handle 120 hp at the wheels without breaking , from what I've seen the driveshaft will break at it's thinnest point (splines) before a cv will break unless there are other stresses to the CV (had an impact or excessive wear) . I have exploded an iner pot joint before under a 1310 but it's history wasn't known before I used it , it didn't seem to have any slop in it but I don't know other than that . |

we run 130 hp throgh drum cv's and they haven't let go yet but the drive shafts may break when we put the 8 inch wide slicks on it |

I haven't broken one with 160+HP (see signature vids) yet but its more from driving style than hp. If you rev the engine and dump the clutch you will break something. Daniel |

Indigoblue, just for clarification are you running Disc or Drum CV's in the Rear? I guess the concern is that a drum one in the rear may let go before a Disc one up front? |

The actual 'CV Joint' itself is the same between the Drum and Disc Brake types, it's only the 'axle' shaft that is different. With Factory standard components, it is the drive shaft that will break long before the CV gives out (assuming the CV is OK to start with). The shafts for In-board CVs seam to be weaker than the older Uni-joint types. The CV's themselves (In-board and Out-board - sound like a boat eh?) will take a lot of HP (well torque actually) before they will fail, but upping the power run through them natually reduces their life.... |
