Post subject: | Cleaning out a brake master cylinder |
OK , what is the current thinking , I have a good brake master cylinder (not pitted or corroded) that I want to rekit for the sports850 . It has a hint of rusty coloured liquid inside the tin reservoir (has been empty for quite a while) . It will all get a final clean with brake clean before assembly but I'm wondering what can I use to flush it all out with before that to make sure it's clean of any grit etc . Was thinking brake fluid but wondering what else I can use for bulk cleaning that won't leave a residue that could maybe possibly harm the kits rubber seals ... |

Thank's Wild_Willy , I thought there was something like metho (couldn't remember if it was metho , turps or thinners so thought I'd better check) mentioned before but couldn't find the thread . |

Nice thread Sports, Im about to embark on the same on a pair of Clutch and Brake Tins and to Bling them up as they are shocking. I'm lucky as they have had brake fluid sitting inside but I expect at least one of them to need a kit. So Ill try a before and after. If you can, can you take a few pic's of what you find along the way and we'll do a How To ![]() It really hasn't been touched on |

I use hot water to flush it out and while honing, blow it out with compressed air straight away, then rinse with brake cleaner. Lubricate the bore and new seals with brake fluid, or brake assembly rubber grease if it going to sit for a while before use. No, it doesn't rust using this method. I've done it for years and I'm very, very fussy about the bore condition before reassembly. Using water lets me get all the parts super clean without worrying about running out of cleaner, it won't leave a residue, affect the rubber seals, and is a brake fluid solvent. hope this helps. |
