 Post subject: How do I Re pin Hinges..

hi i have some chrome hinges for a mini i bought but they have been chromed & not re-bushed & pinned.

so they have a bit of slack in all of them.

can they be re bushed & pinned & just drill the old ones out?

i mean i would be drilling out the bit of chrome but as long as i could re pin it i think it would be ok & you would not really notice it"?

it explains on the mini spares website about drilling them out & re kitting them? will this just kill the hinges & chrome, cracking?

maybe i should get some alloy ones? i don't want to have to spend loads of time & effort doing this if i can just buy some nice stainless steal ones with alot less effort.

i did a search but i could not find anything.

Last time I re-pinned some hinges I destroyed the paint on them, but I was holding it in a vics and using a pin punch to drive the pins in/out.
Repainted hinges and installed. All good now. :D

If you support them on a carved out block of wood, you won't hurt the paint.
The pins need to be punched out in an upwards direction (in ref how they are mounted on car). The top of the pin is splined, usually you can see which way is up.
If there is much wear in the middle bit, a new standard bush won't fix it as the hole is oval. The bushes are only 1/32" (about 0.8mm) thick.
After fitting new pin and assembling, sand the end of the pin off flush with the hinge.

I've never re-pinned chrome ones... :wink:

I've found all of the pins I bought (bought two full sets different places / brands) were too short to be sanded flush both ends. The bottom has a small amount of filler in mine.

Bottom end doesn't really matter, it can't be seen unless you lie on the ground.. :lol:

My pet hate is slackass people who put a 1/4" bolt and nut in them.. :evil:

Has anyone ever made their own hinge bushes and pins?

I have a lathe, hard drawn brass and stainless rod and have thought about giving it a go.

I have turned my own 9.0mm OD bushes when I need oversized ones (due to hinge wear), but I use the standard pins, they are knurled/splined at the top end so they don't turn when pressed in.
Brass is not a good bearing surface, I use LG1 bearing bronze. It's about the same price.
