| Post subject: | Gapping piston rings |
Currently doing my first rebuild and would like to know what the gaps should be on the rings. It is a 998cc +0.020", couldn't find values in the haynes manual. Also what are the consequences of having too large or too small of a gap? Excessive wear? Cheers |

I don't have a manual handy so i can't tell you the gap, but, Too small a gap and with heat the gap can totally close and lock the ring in the bore, potentially causing catastrophic bore and piston damage. Too big and a little compression will leak by, nothing major. |

For a standard street motor 0.007" to 0.012". Try to aim for the lower figure (smaller gap). For 'hotter' and more high performance use, 0.010" to 0.015" depending upon specific use. If the gap is too small there is a risk of sizure. |

It will be running a RE13T cam with a SC12, so I guess I should be aiming for 0.010"-0.015". |
