Someone might be able to help me???

When changing from 2nd to 3rd in my Moke I have trouble getting it to go into 3rd gear. I have to move the gearstick around and keep pressure on it as well until it engages. But then sometimes when changing up, it will engage smoothly without any problems at all.

I have no problems with any other gears, changing up or down.

Sounds like the rod change stuff is worn. I'm not sure what ya replace to fix it up, but i'm sure a few here know!

Are you having trouble changing up or down into third?

If you've got good clutch and all the other gears are fine then I think you'll find that it won't get any better without a 'box rebuild.

If you mainly get the issue shifting down from 4th into 3rd, you may find it a little easier if you tweak the accelerator to give a touch higher rev to engage the gear. I'm not sure why, but it works for me. Can anybody explain?

AFAIK it matches the gear speeds, and the gear is slowing down/not under load as you slide it into fourth - they're spinning at the same rate after you give it a rev

I agree with Pooee, sounds like the rod change linkage at the back of the gearbox - jack it up and get underneath with a light, and get someone to push it from second to third, I reckon you'll see the linkage squirming side to side where it shouldn't. Do you have trouble getting it into first as well?

Probably the reverse lockout plate under the gearshift is worn (or the linkage is) and you ar hitting it when going up to 3rd.
On rodchanges you can improve it by taking bottom cover off shifter box, drill the screw holes a little bigger, put back on. Then move it about a bit L-R until problem is solved, tighten screws.
My son's Clubbie had this problem, but not now!

Yes, that is an engineered solution. As distinct from thrown together with agricultural parts..

Is this isolated to any particular type of Mini. Chris Z and Viv had the same problem but his box was apparently needing replacement..! Good luck .. hope yours just needs a good screw.. well you know what I mean

The rod change tends to go all floppy and bad. They are floppy in the best of conditions.
