Post subject:  Starting a sitting engine

I've got the diff in and I'm going to be starting the engine in the next week or so.
The engine hasn't been started in (and I feel very guilty about this) about 18 months.

What steps should I take before starting it?
It has had a small squirt of WD40 down the bores once every 6 months or so, probably not doing much at all though .

Hi willy,

Is this the GR motor?

If so, it should be still nice and fresh inside. I presume it has had oil in it?
Have you been turning it over by hand?

Put a little bit of oil in each of the bores and allow to sit for a while before starting. When you actually go to start it do all of the normal things, like bringing the oil pressure up before actually starting it.

Otherwise it should be fine.

Hi Ryan,
Yep its the GR engine.
It has had oil in it, quite fresh oil too (with molybond) in, right up until a month or so ago when I decided i'd do the diff in it.

It has been turned over each time that I put the WD40 in it. Certainly no problems in that department.

It should be fine but if it been standing a long while I'd always consider priming the oil pump. Won't hurt...
Fill through the banjo hole, wind motor backwards a few turns and top back up to fitting. Replace pipe or hose.
Crank motor 20 secs or so with plugs out, and you should have pressure.
If not, repeat above until you do.
