Starter motor burned out one of the field windings on the weekend, just trying to figure out whether I can rewind it or if it would be cheaper to buy another - does anyone know of an auto electrician or decent repairer who could re-wind the coil? Failing that, for those in the know, how much would I expect to pay for a new starter motor, or could anyone help me out with a secondhand one stamped 63 or 64?

You could of course, just replace the field windings using any donor starter motor. This would keep your date stamping intact. I have seen new starter motors for sale for around $130.

Might have one - pulled two apart and put one back together - the bits of the other are still kicking around the bench - I'll look tonight - just the windings or all the bits?

Although i think its stamped 66 or 68 from memory.

Thanks for the offers guys, I actually had two spare starter motors at home, but none of them were identical - the housings and insides were all different!

In the end I went to Mr Minisport yesterday and got one exactly the same - I actually had a 76 starter in there - which had been fully rebuilt a few years back so I didn't want to go for a s/h one only to find out it would only last a year or two before it also needed a rebuild. Put best bits of both into one, painted it up, redid all my earth connections and installed it today - what a difference! It sounds like it is cranking the engine 3 times as fast!

However for originality sake I'm still on the lookout for a starter stamped late 63 or very early 64 - please keep me posted if anyone finds one!

Just checked - starter I rebuilt and is on the engine is 2/64 - one on the bench is 7/68
