Post subject:  Removing Pot Joints

Hi

What do you guys use to get the pop joints off the box and to loosen off in the car to get the engine out.

I had a pry bar that i used to use but i cannot find it.

Thought i would make up a special tool

Thanks

Hi Kiwiinwgtn, if you mean Pot Joints, just give them a sharp tap with a hammer and dolly.

Tyre lever or a thick screwdriver or a big hammer and a brass drift.
One big hit is better than 10 little hits.

I've always used a big steel pipe for the pot and gave it a sharp whack on the rear. If it doesn't move: turn it 90° and whack again. Turn it 90°, whack, turn, whack and so on (pipe because it reaches better to the joints end).

I don't like the pry-off method because it may ruine the side covers if the pot joint sits tight (alloy is weaker).

(omg mods gonna hate me  pot, pipe, joint... )

Cheers,
Jan

I have a 1" A/F Gedore open end spanner, which has had the slot widened with the angle grinder to 1.25", and the front of the jaws sharpened to a taper. It looks like a cold chisel with a big slot in the middle.
1 good whack with a BFH from above or below, and the joint (CV variety) is out.

Why pop the pot joints if you are taking the motor out. Motor is quite easy to get out simply by releasing the drive shaft from the pot joint. "Easy peasy" as the miniman says.

Its a lot cleaner job if you just pop the joints out of the the box than having to chase the ball bearings after they fall out and disapear like magic.
