Post subject: | Cage /carby question |
first Question is does any one make a bolt in cage for a clubby?. 2nd question is i have a 1.5" su at the moment , my engine is a mildy worked 1100cc , i am thinking of getting twin 1 and 1/4" twin carbs ,basically would it be worth it , would there be any noticable change in power delivery?. thanks for any help |

I replaced the single 1-1/2" SU on my mildly worked 1100 with twin 1-1/4"s, the difference was pretty significant. My cam comes on around 2800rpm and pulls hard from there, but the single carb saw it running out of breath before 5000. The twins now let the cam do all the talking, it pulls hard everywhere. |

It`s all in the manifold |

I'd believe that ![]() If only I had room back there for a nicer manifold than the standard Cooper S item ![]() |

Does anyone have any experience with these? |

I went looking for a second hand one a few months ago without luck, and got talking to David Rosenthal about making one up. With my air filter setup I've got very little clearance to the firewall as it is, and a longer (better) manifold just won't fit in my car. If you've got Ramflo's then it probably would, but someone else can confirm that. |

I've thought about making a manifold a few times, I think it could be the way to go.. EDIT----> ![]() ![]() |

These ones. They take a Ryco A109 filter and have stubstacks cast into the base plates, very nice ![]() ![]() |

I was under the impression it was just a rod to hold the carbs the right distance apart for the ports. No air/fuel mixture would go through a balance pipe as gases take the path of least resistance. But im open to correction. |

Balance pipe serves 2 purposes - 1. It allows the engine to idle and run reasonably even if the linkage isn't adjusted perfectly. 2. It stops the SU pistons from fluttering (moving up and down). This would/could happen with NO balance pipe, because each carb gets 2 intake strokes in succession then 2 idle strokes. The pistons would tend to fall when there is no suction. IMO the stock balance pipe is heaps bigger than it needs to be though, and poorly positioned. Aftermarket manifolds flowed better than the stock Cooper ones. |

So the balance pipe is more to equalise the pressures than to flow air/fuel? |

Yes. Weber/Dellorto manifolds do not have or need one (they have no pistons to flutter up and down). |

so guessing noone makes a a bolt in cage for a clubby???? In England, Yes. Here - not to my knowledge. I'd still contact Mike re the single as per the PM. You will find the cost of twins properly setup and tuned will be quite high - where's Tiny? ![]() |

i think i found a twin setup at a good price kevin , so im hoping that doesnt fall through , othere wise ill chase that single setup. whos tiny? |
