Ok,,, well,, some of you may have seen the little dark blue mini with the surf boards on the roof at the Mini Muster last month, well we finally got around to throwing it onto the dyno today
Now don`t go all silly on me expecting it to be fantastic or anything like that because we havn`t sorted diddly squat yet,,, it`s simply a std 2nd hand BMW 8V Kseries cyl head,,, absolutely nothing done to it at all,,, took it off the Bimmer donk & slapped it straight onto the mini donk, we shoved a set of bike carbs on & tried to fire it up,,, But it had a few fuel leaking issues out of the little o-rings in the fuel feed "T" pieces on the carbs so we had to fix them, then it just wasn`t rich enough to even fire up & run so i played for about 20mins & got it enough fuel to run, we stuck the cams somewhere aroiund the right spot & took it to the dyno today
first run gave us 54HP
extreamly lean down low, floating into extreamly rich up top, so it`s no-where near right yet,,, we did have a play with the exhaust cam to square it up which gave us a bit more vacuum at idle & smoothed that part of it up, but we`re yet to play with the mid range & top end with the mixture needles
BUT!!! it doesn`t have any ram tubes or air filters on it yet so i`m going to do that lot before we do any more dyno time---> make up a filter base plate , fit some nice ram tubes into it & sort some form of air filter,,, probably end up being one of those big-arse speedway filters if the truth be known,,, only because My mate Stewy has a spare one sitting under his bench
SSSSSSOOOOOOOOoooooooooo,,,, it`s very very encouraging information at this stage
More fuel down low will smooth it out down there (even tho it`s "VERY" nice & smooth allready) ,,,, More fuel up top will give it even more than 54hp for sure,,, & hopefully we can smooth out the transition in-between to make it even more lovely & drivable than it already is,,, & i can assure you it`s already "VERY" nice to drive (for a small bore),,,
i think everyone already knows that i`m not a big fan of small bores, but this one is definately changing my mind
OH!!! & i`ll stuff one of those electronic dizzys into it because my dyno opperator (Gary) says that there is quite a fair bit of RF interferance/noise happening around the dyno apparently effecting the computer & so he`d like to pi$$ the points off & fit an elecky dizzy , & because it`s only 8.5:1 compression ratio it could do with a heap more advance than what it has at the moment too,,, it`s all sounding like we will (hopefully) pass the 60hp mark with it
I have the dyno sheet here & i`ll post it as soon as i work out how to scann it
& just so everyone knows , this particular dyno reads exactly the same as Bob Romanos which reads pretty much the same as the mobile rolling road dyno that is used at our Muster events.
So... 54hp with a std 2nd hand Bimmer head just slapped ontop,,, i threw this donk together as cheap as possible,,, you basically couldn`t have built a cheaper small bore twinky than this,,, virtually nothing is new except for the pistons/rings & the oil pump, everything else is std 2nd hand crap just chucked onto it to just make it all work.
OH!!! & when i get the dyno sheet up you will notice that it`s still climbing in power at 6000rpms & the only reason we backed off it because of the lean-ness,,, (((i don`t want to blow it up just yet)))
However It does go past 7500rpms (& has done many many times already) quite easy tho, so i`m expecting to see some better numbers & a smoother power & fuel curve when we`ve finished "Playing"
so,,, there you go
