Greetings all,

I've recently acquired a mini off a mate who (with a heavy heart) gave it up to make room for something more appropriate for his growing family.
However he can't seem to find any of the paperwork or remember much about the engine. I'm hoping I might find a previous owner or someone who knows the owner who can tell me a little more about the work done to the engine to save me pulling it apart!

Long shot you might think, perhaps not when this is the car in question:

07/1974 Crystal White Mini Van
Engine # V041436P (Vic Police)
Ex Race Vehicle, car no. 19A (painted on hood/door)

afaik the engine work to get it running again and what was required to get it road registered (insane!) was done at Link back in 04/05
Any history anyone might have would be much appreciated, especially regarding the engine/gearbox.

Cheers!

that's something that confuses me a little, because as far as i know the vic police engines were all 1100's so would it be bored that much?... 1100 +???

Nahh , what Matt (theminiman) means is it's a 1275cc engine which is a different casting to the 1100 block . A victorian (or any other state for that matter) engine number means the original was unreadable after the block was resurfaced or ground so the police give it a new number rather than the owner restamping what they thought the original number was . Any size engine and any make engine can have a police number like that .

well,,, it`s definately a 1275 cyl head & it certainly "looks" like a 1275 engine block to me

so i`m betting that it really is a 1275 engine,,, which is a different engine to an 1100,,,

so,,, no, generally speaking , it`s not common for people to "bore out" an 1100 engine to make them into 1275 engines,,,, the 2 are totally different engines

obviously the original 1100 engine has Gooooone somewhere else,,, & who-ever it was has thrown in the big bore donk

be happy, the 1275 engine is worth lots more as an engine & is by-far more fun to drive,,, but sorry i can`t help you with locating the original engine,,, because yes,,, that would be good for "orginallity" sake i`m sure

Has it got disc brakes on the front of it too????

It is a 1275cc block (Morris 1100S probably).
You can tell by the smaller cup type welch plugs, and the step in casting below the engine number.

Police numbers by each state were issued if the old numbers were illegible or missing (eg with a new block or short motor from BMC).

Formula:
V = Victoria
04 = year
1436 = numerical number issued in that year
P = Fuzz. :P

Other states use the same number sequence- N is NSW and Q is Qld, for example.

I have had a few of these numbers issued over the years.

Yeah 7" or 7.5" cooper s brakes (?)

re: the engine, thanks for clarifying the engine no. / size thing. I was thinking that about the engine, i'm sure it still is +40 or +60. I'm not at all interested in tracking down the original or anything like that. Just like to know what work the current engine/gearbox might have had done.
(it's done a big end, so pretty much finding out if it's worth getting fixed)

Well it (kinda) runs, i could keep driving it till one turns up in the block or sump!

Surely someone has seen this car banging around Winton or something?

I guess i can ask peoples opinion on what to do with an engine in this state, repair it, hoping crank is okay and nothing's bent. or buy/replace short motor?

Just going to ^bump this for the friday arvo/weekend forum browsers.
(just this once i promise!)

With any luck i'll be able to get some info on the internals of this engine. Otherwise I might start pulling it apart next week (if anyone in the area is keen to help feel free to pm me! as i might need to borrow a flywheel puller)

Also if someone has a suspension cone compression tool i'd be interested to know.

2 mini's in parts and no idea when they'll be whole again! ARGH! :(
