Hi everyone,

Decided to give my 998 clubman a bit of a tune, since it's been running a little rich. I haven't tuned it since I bought it. Anyway, I warmed it up, turned it off, then detached the choke cable - and nothing. Wouldn't fire at all.

After reataching the choke the engine lazily went to a slow idle, and I found that the idling mixture was being set by the choke - it is still a bit closed when the choke is all the way in. If the engine's running and I detach the choke, it dies straight away.

I've checked the tuning SU carbies book, and this says that the idle mixture is set by the idling screw, as expected. However, I'm running a downdraft carbie and it's a little different to the diagrams.

I've just put it all back to how it was, incase there is some strange reason why it's like this - it does run fine, even if a little rich. But would I be right in thinking that I need to significantly adjust the jet adjusting nut (the one at the bottom of the carbie) so that it runs without the choke? How it is just seems a little dodgy to me.

Thanks in advance.

sounds like you need to "bump" up the idle adjustment screw (at least)

this is how i like to do it,

wind out the screw on the choke lever until it no longer increases idle speed unless the choke knob is pulled on about a quarter to half the way out.

wind in the idle screw until its ticking over nicely

wind out the jet nut one or two flats

looking at the carby from above i turn it to my left to lean and my right to richen
