Post subject:  Carb tuning specifics - I think my carby's a bit messed up.

Hi everyone,

I recently posted about how my H4 carby's idle was being set by the choke, but I've got some new problems now.

After setting the idle without the choke, I attempted to adjust the mixture, using the piston lifter thing as a guide. I've read that when the piston is lifted a little, the revs should increase and then go back to normal.

At first, every time I raised the piston, the engine almost died, so I tuned it until it didn't, and found that I was pouring fuel out the exhaust. I'm suprised it even idled - it was running extremely rich.

So I've set the mixture to where I think it should be - no wet soot coming out of the exhaust any more. But how much should the choke raise the revs when out?

If I pull the choke all the way out, the engine jumps over 3000 rpm. That's not right! Am I still running excessively rich? And why doesn't the piston raising method work?

Judging by how it was set up when I got it, I wouldn't be suprised if the actual carby's been set up wrong - any ideas what it could be?

Thanks in advance.
