I all, Well I'm having my engine rebuilt.... and I'm just not sure what to do with it. I have a budget of about $4000 and this doesn't include the gearbox. The car needs to be reliable but have plenty of fun as I want it as a weekend warrior. At the moment, I'm not sure what condition the motor is in as it hasn't been stripped down yet, but here is what I do know. It is a 1275LS block, I'm not sure what bore it currently is. The head is 12G940, which I don't think has had much work done to it. At the moment I'm thinking of the following. RE13 cam Wedged Crank 1.5 rockers but thats as far as my understanding of motors takes me. Is this achievable with my budget? What else should I be doing? |

With that buget Ryan, you can afford to get a bit of work on the head as well, have a word to GR about his new RE83 cam, that is a nice alternative to the Re13 ![]() |

I think it's achievable. In addition for a sporty motor I would : Use new ARP rod bolts & nuts. Lighten, balance and straighten the conrods. Rebore and use decent pistons- eg Russell Engineering or Hypatec. Fit Mk2 S inlet valves, new exhausts, unleaded seats, and get the head gasflowed. Lighten the flywheel. Cracktest the crank before grinding (many 1275 ones are cracked). Balance the crank, flywheel and clutch assembly. Fit an orange dot clutch diaphragm. Use a Maniflow medium bore LCB and RC40 exhaust. Use a decent flowing intake system- single HIF44/HS6 on a good manifold, or a pair of HS4s, or a 45 Weber/45 Dellorto if you don't mind the noise. ![]() |

There are some good suggestions here, but before you set out, I'd suggest having a think about what it is or how you would like to car to perform. If you're using on the street or more so if it's a daily driver, then be 'realistic' not to say that good results can't be had. |

Remember Keith Calvers moto - 'Tuning should be a compromise between what is possible and what is necessary' Having said that I probably have spent that or maybe a bit more on my engine rebuild. - lightenend and balanced flywheel, crank, balancer - rebonded balancer - ARP crank bolts - lightened and straightend and crack tested conrods - bored out block to 0.100" oversized and RE flat top pistons fitted - RE13 cam - new bearings through out - duplex timing chain - new oil pump - new cam followers - new water pump - spin on oil filter changeover from original - Pulsar electronic ignition mod - 22G295 head with unleaded inserts, bigger valves, new guides, double springs - The Docs offset rockers - three into one Maniflow extractors into RC40 exhaust - twin HS2 carbs (rebuilt) - rebuilt radiator - while I have the block apart I knocked out the welsh plugs and thoroughly cleaned out the water ways - heap a gunk came out ( a lot was solid) - figured if I was spending all this money if might as well be as clean as possible in the water jacket to keep it as cool as possible - new thermostat - new thermostat housing with provision for second probe. - replaced oil feed to filter with a larger flexable pipe - replaced oil relief valve with ball bearing mod - added breather to block - added an alli rocker cover and gave it a coat of paint |
