well just wondering cos that is what is in vivs new motor, the bloke that built the motor bought all of the old cams of him when he shut down???? apparently mine is just a very mild cam (all i wanted)....the specs are inlet opens: 16 exhaqust closes: 21 exhaust opens: 52 inlet closes: 56 the inlet and exhaust degrees duration is 252 and 253... is meant to be very similar to 997 Cooper cam? |

Yep I had a `Bert Jones' cam in my 1st Mini, back in 1966.... ![]() Later, Wayne Jones took over the business. That one is similar to a 997 cam. ![]() |

If so many people had their cams done, and threw out their old factory ones why didnt they make minis with the 'better' cams in them in the first place? was it: cost engine life performance fuel efficiency they already had the existing ones so wouldnt want to change their procedures? |

You had to be there?? Minis were performing Motorsport miracles all over the world....this meant that millions of enthusiasts were inspired to "hot up" there Mins because it was relatively easy and was part of being a Mini sporting person. The majority would have got exchange cams or took thers to Waggots or Jones for a grind that suited their stage of tune... At the same time..there were zillions of stockers running around for work and for play..... |

![]() We're still at it! ![]() The tempo of activity has changed Doc ![]() .....we no longer have factory supported heros to cheer for in every facet of Motorsport (but there are stil a bunch of Historic road and rally racers around). Not to mention the Hans Tholstrup Moke across Bass Strait, numerous road rallys and economy runs type of events ...and even Evan Green with his big head on TV extolling the Mini virtues.... Club motorsport all over the place...now full off ricers etc (no offence meant...WRX = Mini Cooper S of the 90s) The places selling Stage 1, 2, 3 and full race kits are no longer as plentiful...and special tuning bits are no more ![]() Yeah...but nothing has changed for some.... ![]() |

The times have changed. For instance we did not have electronic forums such as this to ask questions in. Todays enthusiast gets his/her info from adverts and the internet and goes and buys it off the counter. That did not exist for us. I had to read books and actually study the dynamics of cars as no one was there to tell me anything. We made mistakes and learnt. I did things to cars that no one would do today. It was a weekends work to put a Peugot motor in a Morris Minor! We cut and welded the tailshaft on the floor of the garage. All good fun. If anyone wants to actually learn how cars work read all of the books on this list.... http://www.beardmorebros.co.uk/website% ... eading.htm. After reading tall of these you will have a strong fundamental knowledge of cars. |

Chris, I'm only 30, but i learned a lot of my trade of an old codger - he'd do just about anything.... (Holden 6 in a KE Corolla anyone ?) His motto was "With Time and patience you can f**k a butterfly" ..... Everyone on Minimania said I was Crazy to Turbo a 998, especially with a CUSTOM exhaust....hey, its pretty commonplace in the UK now.... A Lot of people have been rabbiting on about Rotairies in a mini .. I only need time / money and space, and i consider it already built ! I agree with you, times have changed.... RICE is in, Race is out.... also thinking, engineering, estimating. . . . . . . . Old School still lives, its just gone a bit quiet.... J |

I drove one (put into a Prince Skyline GT) that had the head 12-ported, triple PHH Solexes, mad camshaft- they dynoed it at 248HP at 7000. Not bad for a 186, back then. ![]() Car weighed under 1 tonne... with the Prince 5 speed, it went like crap off a shovel. ![]() |

Triple 40PHH Solexes (similar to a Weber DCOE) carbs came off the Prince Skyline GT motor that had lunched itself. ![]() |
