Who out there has electronic ignition? what type? What do you think about it? Im still running points, just never got round to converting over. Whats the prices like these days?

I'm running an Aldon setup. Cost about $180 I think, took minutes to fit and works great. Highly recommended.

I had a setup bought from mini kingdom (when it was still mini kingdom). Mini Sparc something or other. it was quite expensive, but came with a fully reconditioned dizzy, new coil etc. My old dizzy was stuffed so it needed replacing anyway..

Was a great improvement, like Dr Mini said, especially in top end! also i found my fuel consumption was a bit more economical too :)

i got my "Mini Electronic Ignition Distributer" from Suzi - mini spares in Seven Hills NSW for $285.
i found that it fired better and less carbon deposits on the spark plugs

I've got the Honda civic electronic distributor and coil setup.

I also have the pertronix pointless ignition and flamethrower coil in another car (non-mini) but both have 40mm DCOE weber and similar capacity motors. It didn't make as much difference in that car as the Honda dizzy did in my mini - talking about tractability and feel as opposed to Dyno sheet-type proof.

honda dizzy is wat im running (will be) aswell, the dissy needs to be fully stripped down , then the body needs to be machined by 20mm ( if i remember correctly) and the shaft shortened accordingly, u also need the honmda electronic ignitor for the coil trigger and u need to chsnge over to the mini drive dog, well worth it tho .

hey 1310, who did ya dizzy 4u? can u please tell me how to wire the honda dizzy up? coz i only have the modded dizzy at the moment,no ignition module, can u tell me what colour wire goes where ?the wires coming out of my dissy are blue and green, also whatyear model honda is the ignition module from? i dont know as i got the dizzy for free off a m8 . thanx ben

wireup - thought I already answered that once before? but I'll dig it out again over the weekend.

I bought my dizzy off eBay already done - included the dizzy, two ignitors, and the coil but I needed a rotor button and dist cap. The ignitors came with one wiring harness but it was spaghetti junction (previously hacked and modded), so I binned that and built my own. The person I bought it off machined the adaptor rings at Graham Russell's I think and did the rest himself. Mine's an '85 Civic from memory.

Ausmini4u is right, it does require some mods but they are not that hard. essentially the shaft needs to be modded and the lucas mounting brackets fitted as he described. There is also an adaptor ring (or plate) needed to mate the mini mounting plate to the Honda dizzy body. Mine is a tube of aluminium which was machined to suit the diameter needed for the mounting plate and the top superglued to the body which had been previously cut (with the internals stripped obviously).

Mount the ignitor in the engine bay, replace the coil (important step!), wire it up, check the timing and it should be away!

While on the subject of electronic ignition setups, I remember reading somwhere that when using an EI the gap on your spark plugs should be bigger then specified in the workshop manual, is that correct?

It CAN be bigger. I run a Pertronix ignitor in a 45D dizzy,with a Bosch GT40-T coil, plug gaps .035". No misfires up to 8000+... :wink:

sorry for hijacking ( again) but does anyone know how to wire up a ballast resistor in the honda-mini wiring of the ignition? is it just in series on the +ive side of the coil or patched into both sides? thanx guyz .

can someone please post a pic of the honda ignition module and wiring instructions? coz i got screwed over by a wrecker 2day, he sold me a 'honda' igniter, which actually came from a holden camria :( so i need to know wat to exchange it for next time, thanx ben .

That happened to my mate as well. He went in and asked for a Holden EH sump and they sold him a Ford Windsor sump. Luckily he made the guy in the wrecker write down the part name on the receipt so he was able to go back in and get a full refund.

They tried to tell him that there was a 'no refunds' policy and would only offer him exchange.... but that is against the law according to the trade practices act so he called the consumer affairs etc and they gave in.

If they sold you the wrong part and you have proof, like a receipt... then u're entitled to a full refund. To quote Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas : "Don't take any guff from these swine."
