Someone here put me on to these a while ago ...(you know who you are  )...

I was just wondering if anyone has tried them yet in a mini? I'm about to give it a go i think. I was chatting with my V8 loving knucle dragging friends (god love em :) ) and they were saying that they are becoming all the rage? My Machinist says the same thing....

How hard are these compared to the material used in the block and head?

Has anyone out there tried one? What do/did you reckon?

Thanks

Yeah,, that was part of the reason I wanted to check them out,, all you buggers scared me out of using them

And they are dear,, but I am told that they are 100% re-useable. You can re use the copper ones,, and the BK450's (i'm told),,, but its not really a good idea.. but the cometic ones are designed to be..

BK450's are fine to use again...

We do, and I think the current engine has a 3rd hand gasket in it, no worries!

The engine guy that does all my machining loves them, uses them all the time.

Yeah Stuwey? Do you mean like pull the head of and put it straight back on or like pull the motor down and machine it and re use it? I didn't think you could,,, obviously you've done it with out issue or you wouldn't bring it up,, I haven't used a BK450 yet (I've pulled them out of motors when rebuilding, but not used on from new)... can you tell me any more about what you mean, I'm just curious,,, (like I said I haven't used one,,, I'm just saying that re using gaskets between builds isn't normally what I have known to be common practice,, happy to learn otherwise if your willing to share :) )

850 GT,, are you talking about the cometic gaskets? are you talking in mini's,, or other makes?

Thanks guys

we (as in me & my friends for our own cars) have re-used BK450s heaps of times, over & over

Robbo used one 5 times,,, yes the same one 5 times :-) with the same engine a couple of times, swiched heads etc & then stripped that donk down & built a bigger one & threw that same gasket on,,, then upgraded the cyl head & re-used the gasket again,,, then it (the whole car) got sold to my mate Stewy & he ran the thing around for years until he sold it to Jason (Robbos mate) who owns the silver GT at my stand at the muster,,, the one that blew a fuel pump fuse on the dyno :-) Knob :-) )

& he`s just swapped heads again & is going to re-use it again

Peter Tighe also has re-used his quite a few times on his spridget

if it aint broken , don`t fix it hey???

& yes,,, they really are "THAT" good :-)

cometic i`ve only used with a Toyota donk that we`ve built up for IP racing 20v 1840cc,,, no trouble with it (yet) tho

BUT only use the "Made In England" ones. The Belgian ones are CRAP and don't seal. Payen know about it and are offering to exchange them for the English ones. The Belgian ones don't even hold water in without pressure.

"Some" Mini suppliers are still flogging off the Belgian ones, even though they are known to be faulty

PM for detail.

Umm... Lets see. One here is on its 2nd block, 2nd head (998 -> 1275). The other is on block 2, head 3.

All good

Is there a marking on the gasket to tell where it was manufactured?
I've got one in a sealed packet that has Payen Belgian on the sticker, I can't find a 'made in' place om the sticker though...

I ran 2x BK450s on my 1310 for years. It had flat top pistons in and 11.2:1 was a bit much for 98 unleaded.
They were both so good when removed (to grind chambers out a bit), I could have re-used them. :P
Never seen a Belgian one, yet... :?

I have run Cometic steel shim type gaskets on 2 A series race engines with no problems at all. They are particularly good for alloy heads as the fire ring is integral to the top an bottom shim and don't seem to mark the alloy unlike the BK 450 with the separate fire ring. They are re-usable as well. Having said that, the BK 450 is every bit as good, and I have had no problems with them either.....and they are much cheaper
