Definately asparagus.

A stainless system could be louder or quieter depending on your choice of muffler. If it were me, I'd go stainless with a single carbon fibre silencer off a big bike - something like this:

I fitted a stock GSXR silencer to my mini, and it's a little louder but only about even with the weber now

stainless exhausts are a pain, because of the movement in the engine they will crack and keep cracking, the only reason the poms use them is because of rust from the salted roads, we learnt the hard way and tried a few sets on the clubman sports cars and never again good old mild steel for us

You must have a flex joint on stainless systems, especially on FWD cars.

They're only about $25 and don't impair the flow much at all.

I don't think that rule applies only to stainless systems and most certainly not just for FWD cars. I think all cars should have them; they not only protect the exhaust, but the manifold from cracking as well. THey're cheap as chips like you said, and a brilliant insurance policy given that some manifolds are up over $1000.

Most minis can get away without them, but generally speaking, FWD transverse engines tend to rock back & forth under acceleration/braking.
Stainless hardens and cracks quicker than mild steel does, and also has a much larger coefficient of expansion a proper flex joint is a must.

Most new cars have them, even on mild steel systems.
