Depends how far you want to go.
I've heard of sand/gravel and a good shake, then use a fuel tank inner coating.

The last tank I cleaned out I used around 5 litres of vinegar, slosh it around a bit let sit for a couple of hours and repeat.
Cheers Pete

In the past I've used washed gravel , just the size you see used on the road but wash it in a bucket first so the sand and giner grit falls to the bottom and you just use 5 to 10 mm gravel . I put that in with some water and swish it around to get the loose corrosion off , then rinse it out well . Vinegar sounds a good idea too as it is a weak acid and will clean the smaller crud off .

I throw my fuel tanks in the Caustic,,, cleans em' up reall nice 8)

If you don't have have a caustic tank,, don't worry,, just find a Radiator reconditioner and ask them their tank for you,,, they may not use caustic but it will still get the same result :) I don't think they'd charge more than $60 for it (could be worng) and I reckon its a bit safer than throwing a handfull of rocks in you tank and crossing your fingers that you can get them all out...

Hope that helps

I used gravel first, shook it around.

Then I then poured a rust treatment in and sloshed it around for a bit. let it settle and then rinse with water and dry with my air compressor.

You stick a filter on it anyway

POR do a nice kit that cleans the tank and then leaves a protective coating on the inside

It is quite obvious when you have not got all of them out. They go clang clang clang when you shake the tank.

Its when something goes thud, thud, thud that makes you think what on earth is that??? Turned out to be a little Bert (as in Bert and Ernie) finger doll.

Or the insides of 3 locking fuel caps .... I think the previous owner had a short fuse and broke the caps off when he couldn't find the key (or he lived in a dodgy area ) .
