Taken the week off to get some work done on the project mini...

went to replace then CVs (first time done this - and amazing came apart just as the manual says ) ...

However on dismantling am faced with the following :

Is this normal and not to be worried about ?
Or (as I anticpate) not be trusted (esp as want to use as a khana car) and should be replaced ?

(Looks like a PO used a hard hammer to remove in the past but other wear/contact points are my concern.)

(Of course are Hardy Spicer shafts... )

Thanks - thought that'd be the case.... just wanted a seasoned eye to confirm :wink:

Disc hubs aren't any better !
Can spin bearing in one with fingers ....
And spin and slide up and down in the other !
(of course only found this after <insert suitable swearing> getting all the ball joints shimmed...)

So Shopping list building :
Drive shafts.
Hubs..

Am now looking at upper arms ...
Bearing being resistant to coming out - so take that as a good sign !

This looks like someone hitting the shaft with a hammer to get it out of the CV (rather than hitting the CV with a hammer like I do). If you have a big power engine I would replace it. The shafts are the same size for all minis (pre-pot joint ones anyway) so they have plenty in reserve if you have a standard 998 or 1100.

Yep agree with the top pick .. Mr Lightning did a good job with his hammer.

I used a rubber mallet ...

However there are evenly spaced "chew" marks all round the collar - as if part of the CV has been in contact. (?)

These came with a dismantled car I bought back in the early 90's and been sitting in sheds since then - and thought I'd utilise for this project....

The engine is a 1275 (+30) with a RE13 cam, ported head and lots of other shiny go fast bits.... currently sitting in the kitchen.... will be mated to the gearbox later in the week. (I hope)

So don't think I'll risk it.... worth spending a few $ now and not costing me $$$ in the future.

Hubs can be used.

centre pop all the way around the inside of the hub where the race sits, then use some loctite bearing retention compound to hold it in there.

Works fine, saves buying new hubs.
