Post subject:  Mounting wheel cylinders

Brake wheel cylinders come with two threaded holes - one big one small. Wheel backing plates have two holes one big one small. Big one lines up OK small one not quite.

Original set up only had big bolt as the small hole also not quite lined up - is this by design or is the small one not necessary? _ Any benefit elongating small hole and fitting a small bolt as well?

By memory isn't the small hole just plain to take a dowell?
Either way the cylinder won't move once the big bolt is in due to the casting for the pipe and bleeder

I take it your talking about front wheel cylinders?
The front ones come in two common bore sizes for twin leading shoes. They can be interchanged, but the small backing plate hole needs to be drilled out to suit. All front wheel cylinders should be the same size, don't mix them or it will give uneven pressures which could be dangerous! I have seen wear problems on the shoes when the small bolt is left out. It's amazing how much brake parts can flex under load. Also make sure you put the pad-to-cylinder retaining spring clips back in..

Thanks guys - confirmed the two different - early/late wheel cylinders with Matt Reed I filed out the small hole and added a new bolt, something the previous owner couldn't be bothered to do - took all of 5 minutes for 4 holes
