Post subject:  ADRs in regards to body modifications

Now that I have the bare shell, and I have spent time sitting in the garage staring at it wondering what to do, will the ADRs constrain me too much?

Specific questions:

1. Do I need a rear numberplate light? (thinking about a mega smooth rear end).

2. Do I need bumpers? (same as above).

3. Will they take offence to a carbon-fibre boot? (thinking about putting a fuel cell in the middle)

4. Do I need to have a side fuel filler or can it be on the rear? (thinking about relocating the filler to a flush rear one)

5. Do seat belts have to be AS standard or will a 4 or 6 point harness deemed to be ok? (thinking about upgrading front restraints)

Anybody know the regs inside out?

1 Yes , you need some form of light for the rear numberplate , check out some hot rod suppliers though as some of them sell numberplate bolts with led lights in them so the plate is lit but there is no bulky light like the original

2 No , so long as there are no bumper mounts exposed or sharp edges that would otherwise have been protected by the factory bumper (remember , it could be argued that the bumper sticks out further than the boot handle so the bumper is stopping someone being hurt by hitting the boot handle ) .

3 Carbon fibre is currently being looked at as a potential hazzard due to it splintering into tiny fibers (read asbestos fiber size so all the rules for asbestos could be bought in for carbon fiber) in accidents . So far it's still allowed but rules may be changed somewhere down the track .

4 You can move the filler , so long as it is still on the outside of the car . You can have the filler on the inside but only if it is passed by an engineer and is completely seperate and sealed from the passenger cabin .

5 Don't know sorry , 4 point used to be legal last time I dealt with them but now I'm not sure .

From what I know you can remove the bumpers so long as you remove the seam/bumper mounts.
With the seat belts you will need to get them engineered for the new mounting points.

One of my mates got picked up at a roadworthy for having no seat belts in his rally car. 6 point Harnesses and velo buckets werent sufficient in their opinion. As theyre great when your strapped in, but if theyre loose it would be slightly less than fun.

But this was an 02ish renault clio sport, so youd have to talk to an engineer.

I think the go in Queensland with seat belts, is that the car must be fitted with inertia reel seatbelts if its after such date, whenever they made them compulsory. Could very well be the same in other states. Thats not to say you can't have the harness in the car as well, your just not ment to use it. But in saying that every inspector/engineer has their own view on the matter.

seen a few pictures of minis that have had the bumpers taken off, and the seam trimmed down to about 10mm, and a chrome trim fitted to the length of the seam.
This is okay ya? :D

Im not keen on the chrome strip round the front, theres a picture somewhere but i cant remember where it was.
If i was to do it id weld another valance on top of the normal one. It looks pretty trick if its done well.
