it's a full tank

it was working fine over the last week or so then it kept dropping slowly & i thought oh im low on fuel it hit empty & i filled up but it never come back up..

any idea whats going on? it's a van tank. or traveler tank if they are any different?

maybe the float has gone? im not sure what is inside.

Find the green wire that goes to the sender on the tank. Disconnect it and short it to a good earth, with the key on. Your gauge should read full. If it does then it's the sender, if it does not then it's your gauge or instrument voltage regulator

Maybe your "float" turned into a "sink"

The most common thing on Mini sedans is knocking the wire off the tank.

i reckon it's the float is a sinker..

so how do i fix that.. drain the tank? or how to i check if the wires have come off..

how do i find all these things drain the tank?

the gauge should deff work tested it & there was nothing wrong with it.

where are the wires? on a van.

Sounds like the float sinking for sure, just grab a coat hanger and bend it into a hook and loop it around the float in the tank, lift it up and see if the gauge moves in the cabin. If so swap and fixed.

my car does this all the time, to fix it i just go to the servo and fill her up




seriously i test that the sender unit is getting power and the resistance of the "out" wire. if this is good then i check the gauge's & voltage regulators resistance, if this turns out good the i would drain most of the tank and remove the sender unit and check the float and that the unit has the "strip" intact (you'll know what i mean when you see a broken one)

well at least that’s what happened when my fuel gauge didn't work

If you pull the sender wire of the sender and earth the wire against the tank with the ignition on the fuel gauge should go up to the full mark. This will tell you that the wiring & gauge are ok and you have a sender problem. The most common fault is the float filling up with fuel & the sender not moving. Also sometimes the float/sender arm can get stuck. You can remove the sender by undoing the retaining screws and withdrawing from the tank. Once you have it out you can test it by connecting it back up to the cars wiring and moving the arm up & down or if you have a test light you can do a simple bench test with a 12V battery. There is a drain plug in the centre of the tank but i just drain the fuel with a hose/syphon tube.

Can I I stick a test light into the wire on the sender wire?
I can only see one at the back.

Won't that move the gauage up? If it does? That would mean it's the float?

Short it to the body / ground

It's to short to pull it out at do that.. You can't get in there easy at all really
Can I not use the test light?

My brake lights are not working now lol.

What wire do I stick the test light in to test it the green or
green with the purple stripe in it? I think it may be the switch under the pedal has gone even
