Post subject: | Correct advance plate for a 29D Mk2 S dizzy |
I'm just digging through my dizzy collection, and have a mechanical advance 29D (Mk2 S) with a 10 degree advance plate advance fitted, and a spare drive in my parts box with 13 degrees labeled. Which would be the correct drive for the MK2 S dizzy? I would have thought it to be the 13 degree right?? |

I've been through my blue BMC workshop manual, but it only mentions the Mk1 S dizzy (23D4?).. |

Shouldn't the advance be all over by 3,500-4,000rpm? Or is the cooper s just special? (just a question, not trying to be a PITA). |

Fair enough. I'm just thinking back to when I got my dizzy recurved and I think the advance was all over by about 4,000 rpm (crankshaft). Just out of interests sake, what does mr haynes (or whoever) say the static timing should be for a Mk 2 'S'? (just for interests sake so I can see how many degrees of advance total there would be for a engine spinning to 7k). |

The point at which total advance is reached varies wildly depending on the dizzy type you have if you take a look at the attached documents. Here's two of the pages out of the Australian addendum workshop manual I have. But strangely enough there's no 29D non vac advance dizzy listed in my manual. ![]() ![]() |

Not too sure on what engine you have (1018??) or what state of tune, but advance curves are like SU needles - for different engines and states of tune and even how you have your mixture set determines what advance curve you should have. Cooper S's and Clubman GT's as they left the factory were set to run on 100 octane and the dealers (if they did their job) were to set them for 'super' (96-97 octane). Factory Figures;- For 100 octane the MK II should be set to 2 degrees BTDC at 600 RPM and for 96 octane 3 Degress ATDC at 600 RPM. Yes there is a 5 degree difference here. The factory don't provide static timing figures and personally I wouldn't recommend them for anything other than to get your engine running so it can be set correctly. |

The manual is dated 1970, but may not have had the extra documents added....however there is a 29d listed for the morris 1100 saloons and sedans..there is a 29d there even though its a little difficult to read. |

Hmmmm.....curious, but not surprising. IMO despite how 'things' appear from the factory, have time and again shown me that the factory was an organised mess..... The figures I have come from the factory 'black book' with suppliments and was published 1976 / 77 ish. The suppliments cover the ADR 27A stuff and the tandam master cylinder etc. It does show (and it says) MKI and MKII disy data. It make no reference to engine nos for this data. |

These days with unleaded fuel, sporty cams, ported heads etc the advance should indeed be all in by 4000 rpm. If you drop a stock S dizzy in there, you will be unpleasantly surprised. ![]() |
