Post subject:  Top Left Engine steady, do i need it?
I have a 74 clubbie and have recently taken out the radiator and water pump to replace the tiniest most hard to get at radiator hose that had split. I have been having a lot of vibration and noise travelling through my mini before and I thought if I left out this engine mount it will help. I know the earlier minis didn't have these bars and only had one on the right so I thought it couldn't hurt to leave it out. There is a bit less vibration and noise now but I was wonderin if it is alright to leave it out or will I severly stuff something up. It is a standard 1100 motor with extractors and a ramflow filter so it doesn't have too much power. Also can anyone give me tips on how to stop the vibration and noise. thanks

74 clubbie has rod change box yeah? If so you needs to put that steady back in. otherwise before long you won't be able to change gear cos the rod is piss weak as an engine steady. get some new urethane bushes for it, grease them with the right grease (you can get it from the guy you buy the urethane from !). Do the other side while your at it. advantage of urethane bushes is that oil from the engine does not perish them like the rubber ones.

Early 850's used the exhaust pipe as the main engine steady, which is why its bolted to the bottom of the gearbox. i still used the water pump end steady when i ran the 998 on the 850 gearbox to make sure it does not move around.

If you have a remote change gearbox, then the remote extension acts as the main engine steady, you don't need the "extra" one.

Noise and vibration? it is a mini after all :D

depends what type of gearbox you have, a '74 might have either - if it's remote change like an early car, you don't need the left hand steady, if it's remote change you need it cos the motor'll flop around all over the place (give it time, it will start if it doesn't already).

A remote change has a big fat flat bottomed aluminium housing coming out of the back of the gearbox all the way to the gearstick, a remote change only has 2 rods. Stick your head under and have a look

1100 motor 99% chance it's a rod change. Put it back in!!! :shock:

I think its ok to run without it in a remote, as the remote has the big aluminium? tunnel that bolts to floor pan and geabox, hence it acts like an engine steady.

the more engine steady's you have the better, remote or rod change.

If you have a Remote you don't not need the additional
:?: Can you have the Rad side one and not the Clutch side :idea:
If you use a Remot sorry you will need both and ensure the exhaust bolt is connecetd to the Box :idea:
Why get rid of it when you have a remote...one les gasket you have to worry about :lol: and it cleans up the engine bay..If you are that way inclined :lol:
