I haven't, but i have seperated hydrogen and oxygen. I filled a common balloon with it. I used a sodium chloride solution with low grade stainless steel electrodes, the current draw by memory was about 2.5A cold, but it probably rose as the solution got hotter (cos the wires got hot). It took a good 10 minutes to fill the balloon so there wasn't really much gas produced. I never bothered trying it on a car.

I have read about commercial systems that are claimed to make quite a difference on trucks, but still they require a fair bit of power to seperate the gases.

would you get different result if you submerged a bottle in water and the outlet tube in it and time how long it took to for it to rise as it probably takes moere pressure to inflate the balloon or am i wrong?

Thats a good theory as it eliminates any pressure, and balloons take a bit to get going. But without any extensive testing, i would guess for average driving you would need to produce 50+ litres a minute to make a difference. I might be wrong though, just a guess.

My understanding was that the energy expended to split the water is greater than what is gained?
